چکیده

There is growing debate as to the primal role of capillary endothelial cells in the barrier function of the glomerular filter. Two experts argue the points for and against. Clearly unresolved is agreement whether glomerular capillary endothelium has fenestrae subtended by diaphragms.

Knockdown of the hypertension-associated gene NOSTRIN alters glomerular barrier function in zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Hypertension is one of the major risk factors for chronic kidney disease. Using quantitative trait loci analysis, we identified the gene of the F-BAR protein NOSTRIN in the center of an overlapping region in rat and human quantitative trait loci that are associated with hypertension. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed a predominantly podocytic expression pattern of NOSTRIN in human and mouse...

How do mesangial and endothelial cells form the glomerular tuft?

The glomerular capillary tuft is a highly intricate and specialized microvascular bed that filters plasma water and solute to form urine. The mature glomerulus contains four cell types: Parietal epithelial cells that form Bowman's capsule, podocytes that cover the outermost layer of the glomerular filtration barrier, glycocalyx-coated fenestrated endothelial cells that are in direct contact wit...

Evidence for restriction of fluid and solute movement across the glomerular capillary wall by the subpodocyte space.

The glomerular filtration barrier (GFB) is generally considered to consist of three layers: fenestrated glomerular endothelium, glomerular basement membrane, and filtration slits between adjacent podocyte foot processes. Detailed anatomic examination of the GFB has revealed a novel abluminal structure, the subpodocyte space (SPS), identified as the labyrinthine space between the underside of po...

An In Vitro Model of the Glomerular Capillary Wall Using Electrospun Collagen Nanofibres in a Bioartificial Composite Basement Membrane

The filtering unit of the kidney, the glomerulus, contains capillaries whose walls function as a biological sieve, the glomerular filtration barrier. This comprises layers of two specialised cells, glomerular endothelial cells (GEnC) and podocytes, separated by a basement membrane. Glomerular filtration barrier function, and dysfunction in disease, remains incompletely understood, partly due to...

Endothelial Factors and Diabetic Nephropathy

The rising incidence and prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) (glomerular filtration rate ,60 mL/min per 1.73 m) is a major public health concern (U.S. Renal Data System 2010, http://www.usrds.org). Hypertension is the second leading cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in the U.S. and is also a major contributor to diabetic renal disease, which is the leading cause of CKD and ESRD (U....
